Abstract
A process for the removal of nickel catalyst from hydrogenated oil comprises incorporating phosphoric acid or sulphuric acid and a clay with the oil and filtering the mixture. A few hundredths (for example one to four) of 85 per cent syrupy phosphoric acid may be added directly to a mixture consisting of the hydrogenated oil (containing the catalyst) and the desired amount of clay prior to filtration. The clay may be merely leached out with, for example, a solution of sulphuric acid and then pulverized before use; and it may be incorporated, in the proportion of from one half to one per cent, in the oil prior to its being pumped to the hydrogenation tank. Acidified clay slurry may be mixed with the oil at, or just prior to, the filtering operation. Prior to treatment with acid and clay the oil may be filtered to remove substantially all the catalyst therefrom except that subsisting as a colloidal suspension.
