Abstract

705,382. Typewriters &c. ROOY. Jan. 23, 1951 [Jan. 24, 1950], No. 1691/51. Class 100 (4). [Also in Group V] Key construction.-A typewriter key comprises a block of thermosetting plastic material of one colour, formed with a head portion and a shank portion, the head portion being perforated according to the contour of the letter or sign which is to appear on the top surface of the key whilst the shank portion is hollowed out and formed with a relatively small lateral channel, these hollow portions and channel being filled with thermoplastic material of another colour, except for a cavity left in the shank portion for receiving the end of the corresponding typewriter key lever. The hollow shank of the thermosetting block 13 is moulded (see Group V) between the wall of a chamber 16, Fig. 1, and a piston 2, and the lateral channel is formed by a side pin 3. The head of the thermosetting block is moulded between the top of the piston 2 and the bottom of a moulding piston 5, the cavity in the bottom of the moulding piston being engraved according to the character required. The moulded block 13 is then placed in a mould for the thermoplastic material, Fig. 4, the block being upside down with its " top " resting on the top surface of a piston 14. In the top of the mould is a piston 12, the lower end of which has the same dimensions as the typewriter key lever for which the key is intended. The different coloured thermoplastic material is then injected through a runner 15 and the lateral channel.
