Abstract

704,174. Making bearing shells. CLEVITE. Ltd. May 23, 1951 [May 27, 1950], No: 2067/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) In making flanged bearing shells a flanged blank comprising a steel sheet 15 with a bearing metal coating 16, is bent about a roll 21 while the flanges are compressed by a roll 20. A blank 15 is fed by a fluid-operated member 55 to a roll 21 and is engaged by a gripper 45 actuated by a cam-shaft 48 axially moved by fluid pressure. Recesses 40, 41 in the roll 20 engage the flanges 17. The roll 20 is lowered and locked by fluid pressure mechanism and the rolls are rotated to bend the blank about the roll 21 and to compress the flanges. The roll 20 is rotated faster -than the roll 21 in order to effect a burnishing action on the flanges. At the end of the bending operation a stop 60 engages pins 47 to eject the blank.
