Class 40 (5) An A.C. signal demodulator detects the magnitude and phase of an A.C. source 1 with respect to a cophasal or anti-phase A.C. reference source 2 as a D.C. voltage across a load 3 of varying magnitude and sign. As shown, two equal, but in anti-phase, voltages are developed across the secondary circuit terminals 7, 8 and 9, 10 respectively of a signal input transformer 4 and are connected through rectifiers 15, 16 and 17, 18 of the same polarity but different for each pair to the load 3, and one terminal of the A.C. reference source 2 is connected to the common mid-points of equal pairs of resistors 11, 12 and 13, 14 shunting the secondary circuits, the other terminals being connected to the mid-point of equal resistors 19, 20 across the load. The rectifiers effectively act as switches operated in pairs and in turn by the reference source 2. A plurality of such demodulators, e.g. between successive stages of a magnetic amplifier, may be connected. to a single A.C. reference source. Alternatively the device may act as a modulator, the modulating signal, applied at 1, modulating across the load 3 the oscillations from the A.C. source. 2.
