Abstract

<PICT:0703400/III/1> Apparatus for removing vapours and solids from liquids, e.g. petroleum and tar distillation residues, comprises an outer shell 1, an annular partition member 2, between which and the outer shell there is left an annular space open at its upper and lower ends, an inlet pipe 8 for liquid - vapour mixture, a vapour outlet 12, a liquid outlet 9, and a base 6 with discharge means 7 for deposited solid. The partition member is connected to the outer shell by a flange 3 provided with ports 4. Baffles 11 intercept liquid entrained in the vapour. Steam may be injected into the liquid through a perforated coil 10 in order to effect further volatilization. In order that the downward flow of liquid may be slow, the volume of the space within the partition 2 is preferably greater than the surrounding annular space.
