Abstract
703,076. Root crop topping machines. PACKMAN HARVESTER DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1951 [Sept. 14, 1950; Sept. 13, 1951], Nos. 22666/50 and 21572/51. Class -6 (3) A 'travelling device for cutting potato haulms comprising a ramp 52 for engaging and raising the haulms and a cutter for severing the raised haulms is characterized in that a row of upstanding teeth 156 extend adjacent to the ramp and means are provided to move the teeth in a vertical plane to draw the haulms up the ramp. As shown the teeth 156 are fixed to a lever 56 mounted in a trunnion 57 and oscillated by a crank 60 driven by a shaft 61. The cutter comprises blade 62 which co-operates with a fixed blade 54. A crutch member 20 may be fitted to assist in guiding the raised haulmsto the cutter. The device may form part of a harvester as disclosed in Specification 584,502. In a modification the teeth are utilized as the ramp. According to the first Provisional Specification the cutter for - severing the haulms may comprise a rotary toothed cutter or circular saw. The cut haulm may be discharged to one side by means of a rotary haulm carrier provided with fingers and a stripper wheel having tines which interengage with the fingers of the carrier and ;strip the haulm from carrier. The stripper wheel m,ay be rotated by reason of its engagement with the fingers of the carrier. The stripper wheel may be omitted and the haulms discharged by gravity. The carrier may be in the form of an endless chain carrying fingers.
