[Also in Groups XVII and XXIX] In apparatus for cleansing containers such as metal drums an internal wash pipe passing through the bunghole is supported on a footstep bearing engaging the drum interior, and cleansing liquid is introduced through the outer of two concentric tubes having radial spray nozzles, and extracted through an inner tube by a suction head comprising a trap nozzle and a jet nozzle operated by the pressure cleansing liquid mounted obliquely on the washing tubes with a non-return valve in the supply to minimise liquid reflux; the exhaust of the suction head being directed to cleanse the head of the drum. Fig. 1 shows a cubicle 1 (see Group XVII) in which a drum 38 is placed on a slanting frame 5 on a turntable 3 driven by a motor 4. Bow-shaped spray pipes 36 fed from a ring main 33 cleanse the outside, while a washing tube introduced into the bunghole 37 comprises two concentric tubes 16, 17 resting on a footstep bearing 21 engaging the drum interior. The washing tube is fitted with a suction head 7 (Fig. 3) supplied with detergent liquid through a connecting hose, part of which is diverted by a distributer tongue 14 to flow through a springloaded ball or diaphragm non-return valve 13 and an annular space 43 of the suction head into the outer concentric' tube 16, which carries an intermediate distribution collar 18 from which liquid is sprayed over the drum interior from orifices 19, and a cone 22 at its foot from orifices in which liquid is sprayed down wards over the bearing 21. The spray nozzle 9 of the suction head directs a jet into the trap nozzle 10, creating a suction within the inner tube 17 to extract the liquid from the drum. The suction head is inclined obliquely downwards relatively to the washing tubes, to co-operate with the non-return valve in minimising reflux into the drum on interruption of the liquid supply, and the suction head exhausts through an extension tube 15 to cleanse the drum head 40.
