Abstract
Polythene is moulded in a metal mould, at least part of the moulding surface of which has a coating 0.0005 - 0.0015 inch thick of polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluorochloroethylene, a thermoset resin which is resistant to the moulding temperature and has a coefficient of thermal conductivity below 6 B.T.U./sq. ft./hour/ DEG F./inch, or a combination of such resins. Polytetrafluoroethylene and polytrifluorochloroethylene may be applied as a fluid dispersion in water or in an organic liquid and then baked on the surface. The thermoset resins may be applied in a suitable solvent by spraying or dipping and cured on the surface, the heat removing the solvent. The preferred thickness for the coating is 0.002 - 0.003 inch and the preferred thermal conductivity is 1.0 - 2.5 B.T.U./sq. ft./hour/ DEG F./inch. The invention is chiefly advantageous for injection moulding, and the mould may be of any usual metal, steel or beryllium copper alloy being mentioned. If the coating is applied to parts only of the moulding surface to form a pattern, a glossier surface is produced on the article corresponding to that pattern. To the ethylene polymer moulding powder may be added small amounts of, e.g. heat and light stabilizers, pigments, or anti-static agents, and it should preferably be heated to 275 DEG F.-450 DEG F., the mould temperature being 70 DEG F.-120 DEG F. Two specific examples are given in which the coating material is an alkyd modified urea - formaldehyde resin. Moulded article mentioned are bottles, beakers, bottle caps, buttons, plates, electrical parts and toys.
