Abstract

701,816. Consolidating earth. HORVATH, J., and HORVATH, O. May 17, 1951 [May 20, 1950], No. 11582/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 68(1) The water permeability of ground is reduced by introducing into the stratum a solution of hydrophilic substance which becomes flocculated by action with substances in the ground or the subsurface water. The hydrophilic substance may be an alkali humate prepared by treating humic material, e.g. peat or brown coal, with weak caustic soda. The injection may be made across the subsurface water-courses to raise the water-table or may be placed to prevent sub-surface water entering underground working. Polyvalent cations or hydrogen ions may also be injected to increase the rate of flocculation.
