Abstract

Preformed polythiourea threads are stretched at least 450 per cent. in the presence of a swelling agent and at an elevated temperature in such a manner that the extensibility of the stretched thread is at least 15 to 25 per cent. and then annealed without allowing them to retract. The threads are considered to be annealed when they do not shrink more than 6 per cent. when heated in air for 20 minutes at 70 DEG C. in freely relaxed condition. Water is the preferred swelling agent. The stretching may be preferably effected in stages using known stretching devices. The annealing is carried out in a heated atmosphere after removal of the swelling agent, for example by drying when the swelling agent is water. In an example a hexamethylene polythiourea thread is stretched 513 per cent. in water at 65 DEG C. in three stages, and then dried by passage over a heated roller. It is then annealed by heating at constant length while wound on a bobbin for one hour in air at 70 DEG C. and then for a further hour at 90 DEG C.
