Abstract

701,566. Grinding and polishing glass. GLACERIES DE LA SAMBRE SOC. ANON. May 12, 1952 [May 16, 1951; April 10, 1952], No. 11998/52. Class 60 The grinding and polishing tools 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, of an apparatus for simultaneously surfacing both faces of a continuously moving ribbon 1 of glass are removed for maintenance by imparting successively to a complete tool-supporting beam 4 or 5 a vertical movement and a horizontal movement to a maintenance station. Each lower beam 5 is provided with recesses to receive projections 43 on carriages 7 mounted for reciprocation on supports 10 which rest on a plate 11. When the beam is in its operative position, the plate is secured by hydraulically - actuated locking devices 14, Fig. 4. To remove the beam, the devices 14 are withdrawn by operation of a valve 20, and hydraulic cylinders 13, the piston rods 12 of which support the plate 11, are connected, to exhaust by operation of a valve 18 so that the beam is lowered on to a roller conveyer 42 and displaced by a tooth and dog connection with a travelling endless chain 44 to the maintenance station. Removal of an upper beam 4 is effected by hydraulic cylinders 49 which are controlled by a valve 53 to lift the beam on to a similar conveyer 50 the rollers of which are mounted on sliding or pivoted arms to allow the beam to pass. The vertical movements of the beams are guided by frames 6 provided with two sets of stops to limit the vertical travel of both upper and lower beams. In the operative position of the upper beam its supports rest on top of the cylinders 49 and no locking means are necessary. Instead of being laid directly on the conveyers 42, 50, the beams 5, 4 may be laid on transporter frames such as that shown at 58. Each beam removed for maintenance is replaced by another without stopping the apparatus. In an alternative arrangement, the upper beam is provided with hooks 83, Fig. 8, to enable it to be lifted, while the lower beam is removed by first lowering the tools 3<SP>1</SP> clear of the glass and then lifting the beam 5 by means of jacks 84 to disengage it from projections 93 on supports 82 which are displaced laterally to enable the beam to be lowered. The jacks are mounted on a transporter 85 which is in turn mounted on a carriage 86 travelling on a track 87. In a second alternative arrangement, the lower beam is fitted with lugs 94, Fig. 11, which rest on brackets 95 secured to a frame 92. Removal is effected by a travelling jack fitted with rollers which enable the beam to be moved endwise after it has been lifted until the lugs 94 are clear of the brackets 95 whereupon the beam is lowered. The jacks may be of the screw or hydraulic type. A series of beams for operation on both faces of the glass is provided, and the maintenance stations, which may be arranged either in or out of alignment with the beams, are situated at each end of the series. Specification 694,298 is referred to.
