Abstract

Petroleum products are sweetened by treating, in the presence of air, with organo-metallic compounds having chelated bonds. These compounds behave as oxidation catalysts for mercaptans. Compounds specified are haemoglobin, chlorophyll, the iron-indigo complex, disalicylal ethylene diimine cobalt and di-(disalicylal ethylene diimine)-aquo dicobalt Solvents for the catalysts such as methyl, ethyl isopropyl and butyl alcohols, ketones, such as acetone, dioxane and pyridine, with or without water, and surface-active agents, for example sodium isopropyl- or butyl-naphthalene sulphonate and sodium sulphoricinoleate may also be added to the mixture. Petroleum products referred to are gasolines, naphthas and kerosenes.
