Abstract

Yarns of cellulose with side chains containing unsaturated carbon-carbon groups which may be bonded to natural or synthetic rubber (see Group V) are obtained by treating cellulose or regenerated cellulose with an agent which will introduce an unsaturated group such as allyl chloride, allyl bromide, crotyl chloride, methallyl chloride, butadiene monoxide, allyloxymethyl pyridinium chloride, or crotyloxy methyl pyridinium chloride. In examples, alkali cellulose is treated with allyl chloride and then with carbon disulphide; and regenerated cellulose is treated with allyloxymethyl pyridinium chloride and sodium acetate.
