Abstract

701,229. Electric control systems. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 20, 1951 [June 20, 1951], No. 14601/51. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group VII] In a lock-stitch sewing-machine having a thread tension device comprising discs 48a, 50a urged together by a spring 67 the drag exerted by the device on the needle thread is controlled by electro-magnetic means to vary with the sewing speed of the machine. An armature is secured to the main shaft 24a of the machine and is disposed between pole pieces 61 the field windings 62 of which are connected to a coil 63 surrounding a soft iron core 64 carrying a pin 65 extending through the tension device. As shown the drag of the device increases as the sewing speed increases, but the invention includes machines in which the drag decreases as the sewing speed increases. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the coil is supplied from a D.C. generator associated with the main shaft.
