A thread-operated electrical stop device for a sewing-machine comprises, a metal rod 8 having a weighted base portion 10, 11 slidably mounted in a metal casing 5 the upper end of which is closed by a metal member 7 having an axial bore in which the rod slides, and the upper end of the rod external to the casing is formed with a hook 9 adapted to engage the thread so that breakage of the thread permits the rod to fall into the casing to control the electrical circuit to stop the machine. One wire a of the circuit is in electrical contact with the casing and the other wire b is attached to a metal disc 15 insulated from the casing and engaged by the point 17 of the rod when the needle thread breaks. In a modification spring separated contacts are pressed together by the point of the rod. Visible or audible warning devices may be operated when the machine is stopped by the device. The machine may be fitted with the device described in Specification 625,343 to stop the machine on breakage of the bobbin thread.
