Abstract
700,765. Purifying liquids. SUTCLIFFE, SPEAKMAN & CO., Ltd., and EDWARDS, W.E. Jan. 4, 1952 [Jan. 6, 1951], No. 471/51. Class 46 A method of treating a determined part only of the whole volume of a liquid, such as for its purification or dechlorination, comprises passing the liquid through an enclosed space in such a manner that a proportion of the volume of the liquid follows a path through a treating medium and a part follows a path through the space which is free of treating medium. A proportion of the chlorinated water flowing into a container a at d flows through a gauze cap k into a pipe h filled with an inert substance and thence into a perforated pipe j communicating with an outlet e. The remaining water flows through a bed f of activated carbon resting on a layer of graded pebbles g and is thus dechlorinated before reaching the perforated pipe and outlet e. The inert material i has substantially the same density as the active carbon. The cross-sectional area of the pipe h is determined as a fixed proportion of the cross-sectional area of the container a, for example, 10 per cent. A valve (not shown), operable from a position outside the container a may be provided at the inlet d and a meter gauge co-operating with the valve may be provided to indicate the rate of flow through the container.
