Abstract

699,921. Cleaning windows. VOGT, A. March 22, 1951 [March 22, 1950], No. 6946/51. Class 138 (i). Relates to apparatus for cleaning off layers of light absorbent solids condensed on the observation window of a high vacuum chamber wherein means are provided on the inner surface of the window for mechanically pushing off the layers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a high vacuum chamber 2 used in melting or casting metals, is provided in its wall 1 with a cover 3 having an observation glass 4 sealed by packing 5 to maintain the high vacuum through the agency of a ring 6 and bolts 7. An observation window 8 is exchangeably mounted in front of the glass 4, by means of a holder 9. In order to clean the window 8 a wire bristle brush 16 is arranged along a radial edge of a sector shaped plate member 15 mounted for rotation on a shaft 10 passing through the cover 3. The shaft is sealed with respect to the cover by a high vacuum packing seal 12. The shaft 10 is rotatable by a handle 11 or by other mechanical means. When it is not required to make observations the window 8 is covered by the member 15 so that it is protected as far as possible from being coated with layers of solid deposits from vapours or gases within the chamber 2. The brush may be integral with or connected to the plate 15. Also the plate 15 may be replaced by a circular screen provided with radial apertures to receive strips provided with bristles.
