Abstract

474,534. Centrifugal machines. PECKER, J. S. July 8, 1936, No. 18966. [Class 23] A centrifugal separator has horizontally swinging scrapers to clear material deposited in the bowl; each scraper has cutting and shredding teeth at its outer end and a cleaning element automatically operable at the end of the clearing operation for cleaning the teeth. The bowl 2 is mounted on the vertical shaft 4 and is provided with a rubber lining 8<1> to increase the frictional grip of the deposited solids while the scrapers are operating. The rubber is brushed or sprayed on the wall of the bowl, or applied as a sheet and pins 9<1> assist in holding it in place. A seepage plate 8 is arranged at the top of the bowl as described in Specification 453,651. The hollow scrapers 1 are supported on vertical shafts 10, and a blade 15 is arranged so that it can slide through an opening at the free end of each scraper. A link 37 is connected by pivots to a lug 35 on the blade and to a crank arm 39 fixed to the spindle 40. A spring 45 is secured to one end of the link 37 and to a lug 47 on the outer wall 18 of the scraper. The upper end of the spindle 40 carries an arm 42, and as the scraper is rotated to its inoperative position, shown in Fig. 1, this arm 42 is brought into engagement with a fixed stud 43. This causes a partial rotation of the spindle 40, so that the blade 15 slides within the scraper and its teeth 16 are cleaned by the scraper edges. When the scraper is moved outwards to its operative position the arm 42 is carried beyond the stud 43 and the blade 15 is projected from the scraper by the spring 45. The teeth 16 of the blade 15 may have bevelled side faces as well as a cutting end, or they may have convex bevels at their rear faces. In the modification shown in Figs. 10, 12 the scraper 52 consists of a solid plate with a toothed blade 58 attached to it by screws. A cleaning plate 63 is attached to the scraper by pin and slot connections 65, 64 so that the slotted end 66 can pass over the teeth 60 to clean them. The cleaning plate is actuated by means of a lever 67 operated by a fixed cam 73 on the casing.
