To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. SCHAEFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Vegetable-Faring Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to an improved type of a vegetable aring machine wherein an abrasive disk is a apted to be rocked by an eccentric as said disk is rotated.
.It is an object of this invention to construct a vegetable peeling machine with an abrasive disk adapted to be rocked while being rotated.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a peeling machine with an abrasive disk adapted to be held in an inclined position by an eccentric shaft when the disk is rotated.
Another object of the invention is to construct a vegetable peeler adapted to drive a tilted abrasive disk from below, and further provide a central refuse drain in the bottom of said peeler.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a vegetable peeler with a gear rotated shaft having an abrading disk pivotally mounted thereon, said disk when rotating adapted to be held in a tilted position by an eccentric arm or shaft.
It is an important object of this invention to construct a vegetable paring machine wherein an eccentrically controlled disk is rem ovably and pivotally mounted on a gear rotated driving shaft.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and specification and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings' Figure 1 is a front elevation of a vegetable paring machine embodying theprinciples of this invention.

casing 1 is supported by pipe legs or supports 3 which project upwardly through tubes 4 formed on the outside of the casing. The upper ends of the legs 3 are secured'by means of bolts 5 to a top ring 6 engaged on the upper end of the casing. An apertured cover plate or lid 7 is used to close the casing. The lower end of the casing bottom 2 is provided with an outlet or discharge collar or pipe 8 for the discharge of refuse. A receptacle of any kind may be disposed beneath the discharge pipe 8 to receive the refuse as it is discharged from the paring casing. The front of the casing 1 is provided with a large discharge opening which i is normally closed by a door 9. A latch mechanism 10 is provided on the door for holding the same in closed position. A chute 11 is secured to the front of the casing 1 below the door to facilitate discharge of the peeled vegetables.
The casing 1 is equipped with an abrasive lining made up of a plurality of curved or arc-shaped panels or sections 12 made of an abrasive material. Each abrasive section or panel 12 is provided on its inner surface with a central longitudinal drain groove 13 which extends from the top to the bottom of the section. The abutting sides or edges of each abrasive section 12 are formed with a central longitudinal groove of semicircular shape, so that the grooves of abutting sections will register with one another when the casing tegrally formed on the upper end of the .shaft 21 above the large gear is-a diadshaft head 23.

metrically slotted head 23, having seate therein a pin 24, the ends of which project beyond each side of the shaft head 23. Mounted on the shaft 21 between the tripod 22 and the large gear 20 is a ball bearing 25.
Removably engaged on the upper rounded portion of the shaft head 23 is a rotatable abrading member adapted to be, tilted and comprising a hub 26 provided with a rounded pocket or recess in the bottom thereof as indicated by the reference numeral 27. The pin 24 has the ends thereof secured in the hub 26, through the recess 27 of which said pin diametrically projects. The slot 28 provided in the upper end of the shaft head 23 permits the recessed hub to be removably engaged on the shaft head with the pin 24 seated in said slot 28. Rigidly secured by screws or other suitable means to the hub 26 is a large circular plate 29 the margin of which is bent to afford an upwardly directed flange or rim 30. Cemented or otherwise securely fastened upon the base plate 29 is an abrasive sheet or disk 31 the periphery of which engages the flange 30.
Rig-idly secured in the upper end of the hub 26 is the lower end of a shaft or arm 32, the upper end of which has integrally formed on one side thereof a flange or head 33 having a conical recess in the top thereof eccentric to the axis of the shaft 32. As clearly shown in Figure 3, bar 34 is removably mounted diametrically across the upper portion of the container or casing 1. Integrally formed on one end of the bar 34 is ,9. lug or pin 35 which is adapted to engage in an opening provided in the easing wall. Slidably engaged in the opposite end of the bar 34 is a bolt 36 .which is adapted to be retracted to permit mountin or removal of said bar. Adjustably threade through the central portion of the bar 34 is a vertical pivot screw 37 the lower tapered end of which engages in the eccentric recess proa cross-beam or vided in the head 33 of the disk shaft. A look nut 38 is engaged on the upper end of the pivot screw 37.
The operation is as follows:
The machine is adapted to pare or peel vegetables or fruits. When vegetables such as potatoes are to be peeled, the cover 7 is removed and the potatoes are put into the casing through the open top and supported on the abrasive'disk 31. The cover 7 is put in place and the motor 15 is then started. Water may be admitted'through the opening in the cover 7 by any suitable kind of hose or spray to wash the contents of the machine. The motor rotates the pinion 19 which in turn rotates the large gear 20 and the shaft 21. The shaft pin 24 seated .in the shaft head 23 serves to revolve the abrasive disk 31. As the disk mechanism rotates, it is tipped or inclined-as shown in Figure 4. ' This rotatable inclined disk serves to throw the potatoes centrifugally against the abrading sections 12, and said disk 31 being of abrading material also acts to cut the skin from the potatoes, and furthermore acts to roll the potatoes from one side of the casing to the other. The potatoes are thus constantly turned or rolled about to present different portions thereof to the abrading surfaces of the machines. abrading lining and the revolving abradin disk co-act to cut' or scrape away the skin of the potatoes, while the water sprayed into the casing thoroughly, washes the same. The water and refuse flow from the casing 1 down through the drain rooves 13 and out of the casing through t e discharge pipe 8 into any sultable receptacle or drain gutter placed beneath the machine.

Particular attention is directed to the novel construction of the rotatable abrading disk mechanism which, when rotated, is adapted to be inclined by means of the eccentric shaft 32.
' I .am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

4. A peeling machine comprising an abrasively lined casing, an abrasive disk pivotally mounted therein, means for rotating the disk, a shaft engaged on said disk, and a means supported in said casing and eccentrically engaging said shaft to incline the disk When rotating.
5. A paring machine comprising a casing,
an abrasive disk pivotally mounted therein, means for rotating the disk, a shaft engaged" with the disk, a projection formed to one side of the upper end of said shaft and having a recess therein, and a pivot pin engaged in said recess eccentrically With respect to said shaft to hold the disk inclined When rotated.

A paring machine comprising an abrasively lined casing, a central discharge pipe in the bottom thereof, a tripod mounted in said casing over the discharge pipe, a shaft supported by the tripod, a gear secured thereon, means for rotating said shaft and gear, a pin projecting diametrically through the shaft, a hub engaged on said pin, an abrasive disk mounted on said hub, a bar removably engaged diametrically in the upper portion of said casing, an adjustable pivot pin sup-ported thereby, and a shaft supportedon said hub and eccentrically engaging said pivot pin to cause tilting of the disk When rotated.
7. A paring machine embracing an abrasively lined casing, a tripod mounted therein, a vertical shaft supported by the tripod, means for rotating the shaft, a pin projecting diametrically through the shaft, an abrasive disk mechanism removably engaged on said shaft and pivotally supported by said pin, a shaft secured on said disk mechanism, means removably-engaged in said casing, and a pin projecting through said means and eccentrically engaged in the upper end of said disk shaft to tilt said disk mechanism.
8. The combination With a paring machine casing, of an eccentrically controlled abrasive disk rotatably and pivotally mounted therein.
9. The combination with a paring machine casing, of an abrasive disk rotatably and pivotally mounted therein, means for rotating said disk, and mechanisms for tilting said disk While it is being rotated.
