Objects Applicantsdevelopmefit The invention is embodied in a paring apparatus having a drum vadapted to contain vege tables orthe like for paring and includingA means for agitating saidvegetables within the drum. In accordance'with the invention there isa removable abrasive inner lining Athat ts within the Ainner periphery of the drum. In a preferred form of the invention the removable rlining comprises a plurality of arcuate sectionsv having abrasive surfaces.
- These arcuate sections are arranged so as to .contact Vegetables placed within the drum and are retained in position byV a pair of retainingv rings, one disposed at the bottom of the sections and one at the top. The edges of the arcuate sec- 1 tions that are adapted to meet the top and bottom retaining rings, and the adjacent faces of the retaining rings are bevelled to have opposing angles. The angle on the arcuate sections is directed away from the inner face of the drum and the angle on the retaining rings is directed towards the inner face of the drum. These angles are so arranged, so that the top and bottom rings retain the arcuate sections in position and force them towards the inner surface of the drum. A cover portion having a flange adapted to t within the drum and rest upon the top ring is secured in place by screws or the like when Y the machine is in operation, thus holding in place the lining assembly including the sections. and rmgs.

VReferring particularly to the drawings, I0 designates a drum adapted to contain vegetables for paring. A stand |2 supports the drum l0 at a convenient height and also supports a motor I4 -which is adapted through a system of belting I 6 and gearing I8 to rotate a vegetable agitating plate 20. Thel plate 20 includes a plurality of corregations or raised members 22 which are adapted to engage and impell the vegetables against -the inner surface of the drum. The rotary plate 20 is removably mounted within the drum I0 by means of a slot 23 '1n the lower portion of the plate 2|] and a key 26 secured to the shaft 28. The shaft extends from the gears I8 through a stuing box 29 into the interior of the drum I0. The bottom of the drum lil is'formed with an upstanding annular flange 30. The ange 30 in combination with the stuiiing box '29 prevents water or waste from leaking into the rotating mechanism. The removable inner lining in the drum IIJ comprises a plurality of arcuate sections 40 and 4|. The sections 4l) and 4| are composed of abrasive impregnated material and `in the preferred construction illustrated in Figure 3 comprise five plain sections 40 and one It will of course be understood that any amount of sections may be used, from one to ten or more, the number de- `I pending on the size of the drum and the relative size of the sections that may be easily handled. The sections 4U and 4| are retained within the drum I0 by a top retaining ring 42 and a bottom retaining ring 44. The top and 40 and 4| and the face of the bottom retaining ring 44 adapted to engage the bottom edge of the sections 40 and 4| are formed at an angle sloping towards the inner face of the drum. In the preferred form of the device the angle on the sections 4D and 4| and the top 42 and bottom retaining ring 44 is approximately 45. The arrangement of the opposing angles on the top 42 and the bottom 44 retaining ring and the arcuate sections 40 and 4| thus tends to retain the arcuate sections 40 and 4| securely in place and force them against the inner face of the drum I0.
The arcuate section 4| positioned within the drum relative to the opening in the drum IllA includes an opening 5|] in register with the opening through which vegetables are adapted to be removed from the drum. A door 54 hingedly attached as at 4 6 to the drum lll is adapted to cover the opening |I.` A section of abrasive impregnated material 52 secured to the inner face of the door 54 is adapted to fit within the opening '50 when the door 54 is closed and thus complete the abrasive surface of the section 4| within the drum il. A latch 58 is adapted to secure the door 54 in the locked position when the machine is in operation. A drum cover 46 having a centrally disposed iianged opening vfor the insertion of vegetables, includes a ange portion 48 .which ts within the inner periphery of the drum and rests upon the top retaining ring 42. Preferably the drum cover 46 is secured to the drum l by screws 43 engaging tapped holes in the flange 48, and the top retaining ring 4Z, the arcuate sections 40 and 4|, and the bottom retaining ring 44 are thus locked in position.
Operation Referring particularly to Figure 4, when it is necessary to remove any or all of the arcuatesections 4 0 or 4|, the door 54 is opened. The screws 43 are removed from the cover 4B and the cover 46 is removed. The top retaining ring 42 is then removed allowing for the removal of the sections 4Q and 4| required.
With the additional removal of the bottom retaining ring 44 yand the rotary table 20 the interior of the drum is completely clear for complete and satisfactory cleaning.
The easy complete removal of the entire abrasive lining and the rotary table thus makes the cleaning and servicing of the drum assembly a simple matter. The dividing of the inner lining into several portions allows for the replacement or repair of any of the portions individually instead of dismantling and repairing the entire unit as'was necessary in prior apparatus 0f this nature.
I claim:
1. A potato peeling device having a potato receiving drum including a substantially vertical cylindrical side wall, a floor integrally connected at its lower end to the side wall permanently closing the bottom of the drum and forming a corner with the side Wall, the side wall terminating at its upper end in a substantially horizontal annular rim defining an open mouth, and a removable cover adapted at least partially to close said mouth, and means for agitating the potatoes in the drum including an impeller close to said oor removably connected to a drive shaft, the floor including a bearing opening receiving said shaft, said shaft extending downwardly through said opening, and means below the floor for driving the shaft, a bottom circu- 4 lar continuous and unbroken essentially rigid connection-free retaining ring fitting snugly but freely inthe drum in the corner between the oor' and side wall, saidlring having `a bottom bearing face resting on said oor and an outer peripheral bearing face resting in contact with 'the side wall, said ring having an upper bevelled Yface yextending downwardly and outwardly, to
form between it and the side wall an annular wedge-shaped groove, a plurality of separate arcuate segments each having a vertical edge `juxtaposed to but unkeyed to that of an ad- -groove and being held against the wall bythe bevelled .edge fof .said lower ring, each of said segments also having a bevelled upper edge giving the segment a tapered upper end, an upper circular continuous Aand essentially rigid unbroken -connection-free retaining ring of va .size to t snugly within said drum and having an outer peripheral bearing face in contact with said side wall, said upper ring being unconnected to the drum and having an upwardly and outwardly extending bevelled lower face adapted to bear ragainst the bevelled upper edge of the segments and to form with the side wall a receiving groove for the tapered upper ends of the segments, said upper ring having an upper face engagedby said cover, the dimensions of the rings vand segments in relationship to the side wall being such that the upper ring is spaced from the rim of the sidewall thus leaving an upper portion of the side wall uncovered by the lining or rings, said cover having an annular skirt extending downwardly within said drum, said skirt having abearing face fitting against the side wall, the skirt having a lower peripheral rim adapted to bear on the upper face of said upper ring whereby the weight of the cover resists any upward movement of the ring, the segments thus being held in place solely by the wedging action of the upper and lower rings with the weight of the cover bearing on the upper ring to retain it from upward movement, and the inner side of the drum wall being cylindrical and unobstructed whereby the upper ring and the segments are freely removable upwardly through the drum mouth upon removal of the cover.
2. A potato peeling device according to claim 1, in which the cover is provided with an annular outstanding horizontal flange adapted to overlie the top edge of the side wall.
