Abstract
699,655. Foaming latex. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. May 28, 1951 [June 8, 1950], No. 12405/51. Class 70 [Also in Group II] A foamed latex is produced continuously by injecting a gas into a frothing liquid in a closed receptacle at above atmospheric pressure, feeding the formed froth under such pressure through a discharge passage and mixing latex therewith. In operation, gas passes through a metering pump 25 into the receptacle 13 through needles 17 into the frothing liquid e.g. a soap solution which has been delivered through a metering pump 22. Froth is formed and passes through a pipe 18 into a casing 27 which contains a shearing device, consisting of a series of fixed 29, 31, and rotatable 28 bands on a rotor 32. Latex is metered through a pump 41 and passes to a distributing cup 44 situated in a pipe 43 extending downwardly from the housing 27. A gelling agent e.g. sodium or potasium silicofluoride is metered through a pump 53 and mixes with the latex. Froth leaves the housing 27 through apertures 33 in the bands and passes into and over the lip of the cup 44 where it mixes with the latex, mainly in the annulus formed between the outer periphery of the cup 44 and the inner walls of the pipe 43. Mixing is furthered by a feed screw 55 which passes the mixture through conduits into a mould 56, 57, which when filled is placed in vulcanizing apparatus. An alternative feeding mechanism for the mixture is shown in Fig. 3 consisting of discs 66 and blades 67 which squeeze and scrape the latex foam from the pipe 43.
