Abstract

699,430. Rotary kilns. PRETORIA PORTLAND CEMENT CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1951 [Sept. 22,1950], No. 20246/51. Class 51(ii) In a rotary cement kiln one or more sets of narrow baffle elements distributed longitudinally of the kiln below the sintering zone are angularly offset with respect to one another to give a spiral which substantially prevents direct radiation from the sintering zone to the cooler parts of the kiln. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 cruciform elements,8 are spaced apart by a distance equal to their width and each element comprises open steel tubes 12 extending from a central hub member 11, Fig. 3, through the kiln walls and covered by refractory sleeves 15, the hub member 11 being covered by two recessed refractory blocks 14. The gap between the lining 18 and the last sleeve 15 is filled by means of a slotted section 16 and refractory cement applied after the element 8 is in place. The ends 12a of the tubes are secured to the shell 10 by means of nuts 20 engaging springs 19 disposed between said nuts and the shell. Modifications, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), employ. straight and curved bars and Y-shaped baffles respectively as the elements 8. The pattern of the sets of elements may extend over one-quarter to one-half of the pitch of the spiral and three-sets of baffle elements may be employed in the transition zone between the calcining and the preheating zones.
