The preheating and drying section of a rotary cement kiln includes an assembly of quadrant cells containing heat exchange bodies and comprising a concave inner wall 9, end faces 10, 11 and an outer wall formed by the kiln shell. Adjacent cells are displaced axially and the end faces and parts 12 of the side walls are formed of grate bars, alternate bars being of square and circular cross-section. The remaining side walls 7 are solid.
