Class 51(ii) In a furnace charging machine of the ram type adapted for use with an open ended charging box containing a pusher operated by said ram<SP> </SP>to discharge the contents, the ram 4, which is pivoted at 14 transversely of its longitudinal axis and is also adapted to rotate about the said longitudinal axis, has a projection 5 adapted to engage a recess 6 in the charging box 7, in which slides a pusher plate 23 actuated by a hydraulically operated piston rod 20. The ram 4 is rotated about its longitudinal axis by a motor 16 driving through gearing 15 and is swung about the axis 14 by a bell crank lever 36. The rod 20 engages a recess 27 in a boss 26 on the back of the pusher plate 23 and is formed with a transverse groove 25 engaging a roller 28 mounted loosely on a pin 29 fixed in the boss. When the rod 20 is withdrawn the roller 28 jams between the groove 25 and a lip 31 formed on the boss 26, causing the withdrawal of the pusher plate until said roller engages a stop 32 which moves it out of engagement with the lip 31 and the groove 25, releasing the rod 20. The charging 'box 7 is narrower at the bottom than at the top and has channel-shaped runners 9 at the top engaging the ends of a cross bar 24 formed on the plate 23. A modified charging box, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) has a pair of rollers 28 one above and one below the rod 20.
