Abstract
698,883. Toothed gearing. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 19, 1951 [July 24, 1950], No. 18486/50. Class 80 (i). [Also in Group XXXI] A steering gear of the rack and pinion type comprises a rack 11 mounted in a carrier 8 through which motion is transmitted to the steering mechanism for the wheel or wheels, the required resilient pressure being produced by a spring pressed pawl 10 in the form of a yoke which straddles the carrier and engages the rack, the pawl having an 'internal cylindrical surface loosely embracing the carrier and an external cylindrical surface the axis of curvature of which is perpendicular to that of the internal surface, the arrangement permitting the rack to rock to some extent within the pawl and the latter to rock to some extent about the axis of curvature of its external surface. The rack 11 is of D-shape in cross section and is mounted between abutments in the carrier 8 so that it has no independent longitudinal movement. The pawl engages a cut-away portion of the casing 1 which houses the rack and carrier so that it cannot move longitudinally with the rack. The ends of the carrier are joined by links to half-track rods which in turn operate steering arms. The half-track rods are hollow to act as oil reservoirs for the joints. Concertina type closures between the ends of the carrier and the casing 1 exclude dirt from the rack and pinion.
