Class 79(5) A power assisted stearing gear for a motor vehicle has a steering wheel shaft a with a limited amount of axial movement x which is transmitted by a lever g to a valve f controlling the supply of pressure fluid to one or other side of a piston e coupled by a lever k and a link k<SP>1</SP> to the steering drop arm n, the lever g, valve f, piston e, lever k and link k<SP>1</SP> forming a unit which can be added to or removed from the steering shaft casing according to whether or not power assistance is required. To relieve the steering box p from road shocks, is secured to the vehicle frame q by a bolt o which also serves as a fulcrum for the drop arm. The steering gear may be of the recirculating ball type.
