698,690. Hypodermic injection apparatus. BECTON DICKINSON & CO. Nov. 29, 1950, No. 29260/50. Class 81 (ii). In order to avoid bursting of the ampoule of a velocity injection apparatus a pressure is applied to the outside of the ampoule, which is approximately equal to the pressure inside. This is achieved by effecting expulsion of the medicament by fluid pressure. In one form the ampoule 16 having a plunger 18 is enclosed in a rubber sac 26, the side walls of which are spaced from the walls of the body 15. Consequently when pressure is applied through the actuating fluid in duct 15<SP>1</SP> it acts upon the side walls of the ampoule at the same time as it thrusts the piston 18 forward. The rubber sac stretches to follow the movement of the piston. Various alternative forms are described in one of which a free portion of the sac is provided to avoid stretching, while in another the ampoule is displaced around a fixed piston during discharge. In another form two separate rubber sacs are provided, one of which surrounds the ampoule while the other serves to apply pressure to the piston and, in a further modification of this the second sac is replaced by a piston and plunger which thrusts directly on the piston in the ampoule.
