Abstract

686,344. Hypodermic syringes. BECTON DICKINSON & CO. Sept. 27, 1950, No. 23714/50. Class 81 (ii). A discharge unit for a needleless hypodermic injection device is provided with a bored stem having its outer end extending at an angle to its main axis and provided with a discharge orifice defining a medicament column of small cross-section, the stem being attached to apparatus for subjecting liquid medicament to high pressure. The barrel 5 of the injection device is provided with a medicament chamber 8 which may contain an ampoule 10. The forward end of the medicament chamber 8 is closed by the base 14 of the bored stem 16. The base 14 is provided with a cannula 15 which is pointed at one end so that on screwing the base 14 into operative position, a closure of the ampoule 10 is pierced and pushed a short distance into the ampoule 10 so that the liquid displaced fills the bore of the stem 16. The forward end of the stem 16 may be bent and its extremity may either project through or be level with a contact plate 18 mounted thereon. On making an injection, liquid may be discharged from the medicament receiving chamber 8 by the action of a plunger 6. The ampoule used may be stoppered or may be of the collapsible type. The bore of the stem 16 may be lined with a cannula which may either fit tightly within it or be surrounded by packing material. Specification 652,945 is referred to.
