Abstract

691,754. Hypodermic syringes. BECTON DICKINSON & CO. Sept. 26, 1950 [Sept. 29, 1949], No. 23606/50. Class 81 (ii). A needleless hypodermic injection device has a piston or plunger working in a medicamentreceiving chamber of small transverse dimension relative to its length, medicament being displaced from the chamber by the plunger which is solely operated by manual means. A plunger in the form of a rod 20 secured to an actuating member 21 may be moved within a medicament chamber 17 the length of which is at least one hundred times its diameter. The rod 20 is provided with tubular supporting means 22 which is also secured to the actuating member 21 but which is moved within the casing 10 of the apparatus and external to the medicament chamber 17. The forward end of the tubular supporting means 22 is provided with a member 15 which slidably engages the medicament chamber 17 and which abuts against a threaded collar 23 (Fig. 4), secured to the rear end of the medicament chamber 17, when the plunger rod 20 is retracted between the threaded collar 23 and a cap 24 fitted thereon sealing material 25 is enclosed. Medicament is discharged at a skin-penetrating velocity and pressure through an orifice 14 in a nozzle 13. A skin-contacting flange 12 is provided at the forward end of the casing 10. In an alternative embodiment of the invention (not shown) an ampoule of great length relative to its diameter may be housed within the medicament chamber, one end of the ampoule being provided with a stopper which may be pierced by a point on the inner end of the nozzle. The ampoule is inserted by removing the skin contacting flange and the nozzle.
