A tapering and profiling attachment for lathes comprises a base block mounted on the cross-slide, a taper or profile - regulating means mounted on a longitudinal slideway on one end of the base and extending parallel to the lathe bed, an anchoring device for securing the regulating means against axial movement and a tool-carrying block mounted on a slide on the base and extending at rightangles to the longitudinal slide, the tool block carrying the tool at one end and having tracer means at the opposite end to bear against said regulating means when the carriage is traversed to control displacement of the tool block along its slide. The base block 1, Fig. 2, with a dovetailed part 2, is clamped on a lathe carriage at the rear thereof. A shelf 5 integral with the block and extending from the back carries a slide 7 in a guideway parallel to the lathe bed. A guide or profile bar 8 is pivoted to the slide 7 by a screw 11 and may be secured in an angular position relative to the slide by screws 12, Fig. 3. A bracket 13 extends upwardly from one end of the slide 7 and is used to anchor the slide to some fixed part of the lathe. A further slideblock 15 moving in guideways on the upper surface of the base at right-angles to the lathe bed has a " T "-slot 17 for attaching a toolholder. This slide is drawn to the right, Fig. 2, by a spring 20 which maintains a tracer pin 19a against the operative edge of the bar 8. The tracer pin is adjustable in the slide 16 and may be extended or retracted to vary the position of the tool by a knob 22a. Profiles or tapers can be cut according to the form of the operative edge of the bar 8 and its adjustment on the slide 7; the latter remains stationary as the carriage, with the attachment, is traversed along the work.
