Abstract

698,189. Road-sweepers. FRASER, R., and TUSON. V. H. Feb. 25, 1952 [Nov. 23, 1950], No. 28713/50. Class 107 [Also in Group XXIII] A hand propelled sweeping machine, Fig. 1, comprises a casing 10 having a pair of coaxial carriage wheels 11 one on each side of the machine and two rotatable brushes 38 and 39 (not shown) mounted in the casing in axial alignment upon a common axle member 42, the brushes being capable of rotation on the axle independently of one another and each being driven through suitable gearing 29, 31 from the adjacent carriage wheel, the gearing being contained in gear boxes 25 rockable about an axis coaxial with or parallel and closely adjacent to the axis of the wheels 11 and which carry the axle 42, whereby the axle may be raised or lowered relatively to the axis of the wheels 11. A dust receiving container 16 is removably mounted on the machine as by pins 17 thereon engaging in slots 18 in members. 19 carried by a frame 13 fixed to the casing. The gear boxes 25 each have an arm 45 provided with a spring-loaded plunger 46 to engage in any one of a series of holes 47 lying on an arc concentric with the axis of the wheels 11. As shown in Fig. 3, the gear box 25 is mounted on a stub axle 24 by means of its sleeve 26 and the gear wheel 29 carrying the carriage wheel 11 and having a tubular hub 27 is mounted on the sleeve 26, a self-lubricating bush 28 being interposed between the sleeve and hub. The gear 29 meshes with the gear 31 carried by the box 25 and having a sleeve 33 provided at its end with a pair of axial lugs 36 diametrically opposed to one another. The lugs engage in corresponding slots 43 in the ends of a bush 41 of a tubular brush hub 40. The sleeve 33 passes through an arcuate slot 34, Fig. 1, in the casing. The axle 42 passes through the sleeve 33, brush hubs and corresponding sleeve on the opposite side of the machine and is secured against longitudinal displacement by circlips 44. Distance washers (not shown) may be provided on the axle 42 between the two brushes to ensure engagement of the lugs 36 and slots 43. The Provisional Specification describes other means to enable the height of the axle 42 to be adjusted relative to the stub axles 24.
