Abstract

698,123. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials. EISENHUT, O. Jan. 18, 1951. [Oct. 12, 1948; Sept. 8, 1949] No. 1357/51. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] Washable cloth-like material is made by bringing a fleece consisting wholly or mainly of regenerated cellulose fibre into contact with 5-15 per cent caustic soda solution at -5 to +25‹C. for a few seconds up to 1 minute, then neutralizing rinsing, and drying. The fleece may be carried through the caustic solution between two small-mesh travelling bands, or the solution may be applied by padded rollers or spraying. The fleece may be a carded web which may be strengthened by laying a part of the fibres obliquely or transversely, e.g. by pushing the fleece forward beneath intermittently lowered combs. Viscose or cuprammonium cellulose fibres may be used with small admixtures, if desired, of cotton, combings from spinning mills, or fibres from torn rags. The product may have a patterned surface imparted by engraved rollers or by pressing while between the finemeshed travelling bands. The fleece may be treated with glue or viscose before the alkaline treatment. The alkali may be applied in restricted amount so that only the surface of the fleece is affected.
