Abstract

697,554. Shaping closure caps for paper containers. LILY-TULIP CUP CORPORATION. June 25, 1951, No. 15011/51. Class 100(ii) [Also in Group XVII] A paper closure member for a paper container 10, Fig. 2, having an internal groove 15 adjacent the open end thereof comprises a single sheet of paper board formed into an end wall portion 18, and an integral side peripheral flange portion 19 extending upwardly therefrom, the juncture of these portions being a compressed solid peripheral bead 21 substantially in the same plane as the wall portion 18, extending beyond the flange and adapted to snap into the groove 15. The container is formed with a rim 13 and the flange 19 is curled over at 20 to receive it. The closure member is formed in apparatus comprising a female die 25, Figs. 3, 4, 5, having a raised rib 28, an inwardly projecting lip 29 and a recessed part 26 in which slides a male die 27. A paper board blank 17a is placed over the female die as shown in Fig. 3 and pressed by a second male die 30 into a cup shape, the bottom wall 18 of which is gripped against the die 27, a ring die 31 then descends to form the circumferential extremities of the blank against the lip 29 and rib 28 as shown in Fig. 4. The ring 31 remains in engagement with the female die to grip the outer parts of the flange 19, leaving unconfined only a flange portion corresponding to the recessed part 26 of the female die. The male dies 27; 30 then move upwardly together as shown in Fig. 5 compressing the unconfined portion into a solid peripheral bead. When the male die 30 and ring 31 are withdrawn the formed closure is ejected by a plunger 32 snapping the bead 21 past the lip 29. Alternatively the female die may be formed in a series of segments adapted to separate to release the closure.
