Abstract

697,391. Gear-finishing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 2, 1948 [Dec. 2, 1947], No. 31250/48. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] A power transmission gear comprises two helically-toothed driving pinions 21, 22 each having a number of axially distanced wheel sections, at least one of which has its teeth tapered in the direction toward another section. The shapes of the wheel sections are similar to those of known shaving cutters which are described in the Specification. One such shaving cutter comprises two or more parts rabbeted and bolted together or formed integrally on a common body. In a twin-section cutter, Fig. 4, the tooth sides 10a, 11a and 10b, 11b have the same lead angles. The profiles of the sides 10a ... 11b may differ. In Fig. 5, the leading or guiding section 12 may have a partly or completely plain portion with rounded ends 13. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the centresection 18 is conventional, the other sections being designed to give intimate cutting contact with the work. Suitable cutter dimensions are given. Methods of checking the setting of the cutter sections relatively to each other are described. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the statement that the serrations in the cutters may pass completely through the teeth, may be relatively staggered to each other and may lie at an angle. Lapping tools may be made with the same tooth shape. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
