Abstract

697,093. Heating air. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 23, 1951 [May 17, 1950], No. 12390/50. Class 64 (iii) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIII] Air bled from the compressor of a gas turbine engine is heated by the turbine exhaust gases in a heat exchanger before being used to transmit heat to at least one surface on which ice is liable to form. Air from the compressor is led to a connection 28 on the outer wall 17a of the turbine exhaust assembly 17. The connection 28 leads to a distributer element 29 accommodated in one of the aerofoil section fairings 17d and is thus conveyed to a heat exchanger of which part of the conical fairing 17b forms the heat exchange surface. The air leaving the flared distributer 29 flows into an annular manifold and thence rearwardly into a narrow annular passage 30 between an inner conical wall 31 and the apex portion of the conical fairing 17b and is thus heated by the combustion products flowing through the exhaust assembly 17. The heated air leaves the heat-exchanger through a conduit 32 connected to the apex of the fairing 17b and is led through heat insulated ducting 34 to the position of use. The heat exchanger may be of the tubular type located within the conical fairing 17b which may be forced with internal passages through which the hot exhaust gases may flow.
