Abstract
696,831. Universal joints. BELLOME, A. Nov. 6, 1950 [Nov. 16, 1949], No. 27057/50. Class 80 (ii). In a constant-velocity-ratio universal joint comprising balls 9 engaging intersecting inclined grooves 10 of arcuate section in the opposed faces of inter-engaging claws projecting axially from shaft flanges 2, 3, the radius of the arcuate grooves is slightly smaller than that of the balls, so that there is point contact at no load, while the balls are forced into the grooves under load. The grooves may be deeper (or shallower) as the distance from the shaft axis increases. In a joint with fixed articulation centre, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, the joint is centred by a ball 1 formed with grooves 6, 7, 8 which permit the ball to be inserted, the ball 1 being then turned and held in locking position by inserting a pin 5 to engage a groove 4 (or one of the grooves 6, 7, 8) in the ball 1 and a groove in the flange 2. In the slidable joint shown in Fig. 5, one ball end of a rod 32 is capable of sliding in the flange 3, limited by a spring ring 34, and the other ball end of the rod 32 is held by a spring ring 40 in a member 39 capable of sliding in the flange 2, limited by a spring ring 43. The grooves 10 may be machined or ground by securing the flange in an indexing head 19 formed with bushed apertures 20 and adapted to be turned so that the apertures 20 are successively engaged by a pin 21 which is slightly smaller than the apertures. Two flanges may be machined simultaneously, being held in separate indexing heads.
