Abstract

Textile materials of cellulose esters or ethers are impregnated with a thiocyanate and then, while still carrying the thiocyanate, printed with a thiocyanate-free preparation containing the colouring agent. The process is particularly applicable to processes in which two or more printing pastes are used, at least one of which falls at least in part on another, and to processes using an intaglio surface in which the depth of engraving is greater at some points than at others. The amount of thiocyanate used may be from 3 to 7 per cent of the weight of the material. The dyestuffs may comprise acid wool dyes, metallized acid dyestuffs, acid sulphuric esters of dyes containing hydroxyalkyl groups, direct cotton dyes, mordant dyes, dispersed acetate dyes, esters of leuco vat dyes, vat dyes, oxidation type dyes and developed azo dyes. The liquid medium carrying the dye or component may be thickened and may include an organic liquid such as an alcohol, ketone, ester, ether or a compound containing a hydroxy group and a polar group of another kind. The printing composition may also contain urea. In examples, (1) cellulose acetate fabric is padded with a solution of ammonium thiocyanate and dried, and then printed with a paste consisting of an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose, methylated spirit and Croceine Scarlet 3BS, and steamed; (2) fabric padded with ammonium thiocyanate and dried, is printed with a thickened solution of Solway Green G150 and urea, and steamed; (3) cellulose acetate fabric padded as in (1) is printed with a paste containing p-nitroaniline -->sodium salt of the sulphate ester of ethylhydroxyethylaniline and methylated spirit, and then steamed; (4) cellulose acetate fabric is padded as in (1), printed with a paste containing Omega Chrome Brilliant Blue B200, chromium acetate and methylated spirit, and steamed; (5) cellulose acetate fabric is padded with sodium thiocyanate, dried, printed with a paste containing the azo dye p-nitroaniline-->-di(oxyethyl)-m-chloroaniline, and steamed; (6) cellulose acetate fabric padded with ammonium thiocyanate and dried, is printed with a paste containing Soledon Jade Green XS and methylated spirit, steamed, and oxidized with acid and sodium nitrite; and (7) cellulose acetate fabric padded as in (5) is printed with a paste containing Durindone Red BS, sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate, potassium carbonate and glycerine, steamed, and oxidized with sodium percarbonate. Specifications 579,718, 594,722, 614,600, 692,934 and 696,135 are referred to.
