Abstract
Cellulose esters; dyeing; printing; wetting agents, applications of.--The capacity for dyestuffs of materials made of cellulose esters, such as the acetates, propionates, acetopropionates and acetobutyrates, is increased by treatment of the materials with tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonic acid or a salt, e.g. an alkali metal, ammonium, alkaline earth metal or magnesium salt, thereof. The cellulose ester fibres may be heated to 30--100 DEG C. with an aqueous solution of the acid or a salt thereof, or they may be wetted with the acid or salt, dried and steamed, or they may be printed with a thickening containing the acid or salt with or without a suitable dyestuff other than a vat or sulphur dyestuff and steamed. The following examples are specified. (1) Acetate artificial silk is immersed for \ba1/2\be hour in a 10 per cent. aqueous solution at 95 DEG C. of sodium tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonate, rinsed and dried; the product gives stronger dyeings or printings than the untreated artificial silk. (2) An acetate artificial silk material is printed with a mixture of gum arabic and sodium tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonate and the printings are steamed under pressure for 10 minutes, washed and dried; the printed parts give stronger dyeings than the unprinted parts. (3) An acetate artificial silk material is printed with a paste containing gum arabic thickening, sodium tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonate and finely dispersed 1 : 4-di-oxy= ethylaminoanthraquinone, steamed and finished; the resulting printings are stronger than those obtained without the sodium tetrahydronaphthalene - b - sulphonate. (4) An aqueous paste is prepared of a mixture of (a) the product of condensation from sodium 1-o -sulphomethyl-2-naphthol-6-sulphonate and a phenol-formaldehyde resin in dilute caustic soda at about 126--150 DEG C. (cf. Specification 250,398, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], (b) sodium ligninesulphonate and (c) sodium tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonate; on drying and pulverizing a powder is obtained suitable for the manufacture of printing pastes yielding very strong and even printings. (5) An acetate artificial silk material is printed with a mixture containing industrial gum, sodium tetrahydronaphthalene - b - sulphonate, thiodiglycol and water, steamed for \ba1/2\be hour and dried or rinsed. (6) An acetate artificial silk material, printed as in (5), is dyed in a bath containing zinc nitrate and one of the dyestuffs Chrysoidine, Safranine, Astraphloxin F F extra, Benzyl violet, Methylene blue, Methylene green or the oxazine from nitrosodimethylaniline and b -naphthol. (7) Acetate artificial silk, printed as in (5), is dyed in a bath containing Marseilles soap and one of the following dyestuffs or dyestuff mixtures, (a) 1 : 4 : 5-triaminoanthraquinone in admixture with 1 : 4 : 5 : 8-tetraminoanthraquinone, (b) 1 : 4-di-oxyethylaminoanthraquinone, (c) 1 : 4-diaminoanthraquinone, (d) 1 : 4-di-oxyethylamino-5 : 8 dioxyanthraquinone, or (e) the dyestuff p-nitraniline-->hydroxyethyl - m - toluidine (cf. Specification 251,155.) [Class 15(ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], (8) A printing paste containing Senegal or industrial gum, the dyestuff p-nitraniline-->hydroxyethyl-m-toluidine, thiodiglycol and sodium nitrobenzene-sulphonate with an addition of sodium tetrahydronaphthalene-b -sulphonate gives stronger and more even printings than are obtained without the addition. Specification 276,100, [Class 15(ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], also is referred to.
