The pick-up arm 1 has an extension 2 which engages with a threaded rod 4 rotably mounted in a block 5 pivotally mounted on a support 6, so that by rotating the rod the stylus may be moved to any desired point on the record. The part 2 also co-operates with a scale 8 which is screwed to the block 5 (the scale is shown in a raised position). The rod 4 is moved into any one of three positions by moving a handle 7. With the handle in its lowest position the stylus is in contact with the record and the rod 4 is above the part 2. In the middle position of the handle, the rod 4 is lowered to engage the part 2 and depress it slightly to raise the stylus from the record and allow it to be positioned over the record. The handle is held in this position by a spring-pressed ball on the support 6, to prevent the stylus from falling onto the record. In the upper position of the handle the stylus is freed from the record and the part 2 is freed from the rod, to allow the pickup arm to be placed on a rest at the side of the turntable (see Fig. 5, not shown). The positioning mechanism and the part 2 act as a stop to prevent the pick-up arm from being lowered onto the centre of the record. Specification 633,729, and U.S.A.
