[Class 40 (ii)] A gramophone pick-up is movable vertically from the normal face of one record to play the underside of a record rotated above the pickup by means of a movable counterweight. This counterweight 10, Fig. 1, pivoted at 8 about the same pivot as the pick-up arm, rests on a crossbar 12 so as to lift the arm for playing the upper record 14. When the rod 13 is raised by the changer mechanism, the counterweight is lifted, and the arm, relieved of the counterweight, descends by its own weight on to the lower record. In two modifications, Figs. 3 and 4, (not shown), the counterweight is located below the motor board and acts on the rear end of the pick-up arm through levers. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the counterweight is pivoted and fits over the rear end of the arm and is lifted, when required, by a vertical rod passing up through a hole in the top of the arm. In a still further modification, Fig. 8, the counterweight 10b acts forwardly of the pivot 8 so as to hold the arm onto the lower record, the arm being so weighted that on raising the counterweight by moving rod 53 downwards, the arm rises to play the upper record.
