Abstract

649,846. Magazine gramophones. KLING- BERG, O. H. July 14, 1948, No. 18955. [Class 40 (ii)] In an automatic record-changer gramophone an operating lever 15 pivoted for vertical movement in a slotted rotatable shaft 13 carrying the tone arm has three prongs 21, 22, 23, co-operating respectively with (i) an inclined control surface 12 when the tone arm is in innermost position after a record is played, the surface 12 being connected to a disc 4 driven through reduction gearing from the turntable shaft, (ii) a bifurcated lever 7 pivoted to the disc 4 and a fixed point 8 so as to oscillate between two limits, its forked end engaging the prong 22 when the lever 15 is raised by the surface 12, and (iii), Fig. 3, a fixed control path 26 determining the position at which the tone arm is lowered on to the record during an inward traverse effected by the lever 7. The lever 15 raises the tone arm through a rod 19 and operates also the record-changing mechanism. The prong 23, on the lever 15, being raised is located clear of the edge of the surface 26 but during the outward traverse of the lever 15 passes over a leaf-spring 30 mounted over an opening 29 in the surface 26, then along the surface 26 also formed as a leaf-spring to a support 24. On the inward traverse of the lever 15 the lever 15 and tone arm drop to the record at the edge of the support 14 or at the opening 29, dependent on the position, raised or otherwise, of the end of the leaf-spring 26, controlled by linkage 67, 70, 28 from the record changer. A dashpot 48 cushions the dropping of the lever 15. Record change mechanism. Records are supported between an offset shoulder 36, Fig. 3, of a centre post 35 and either a fixed plate 76 (for larger records) or the extreme edge of a spring-biassed pivoted plate 41 for smaller records. Beneath the plate 41 is attached a plate 44 carrying a spring-loaded catch 49 which passes up through a slot 50 in the upper plate 41, a bell-crank 53, 54 underneath the plate 41 operating to push the catch 49 along the slot, and thus smaller records off the plate 41, when actuated by linkage 56 from the lever 15. The linkage 56 also operates a further catch 59 to push larger records off the fixed plate 76 on to the pivoted plate 41, which then tilts to allow clear passage of the records, at the same time operating linkage 67, 70, 72, 28 to raise and set the leaf-spring 26 for correspondingly lowering the tone arm. The plate 72 is reset by the surface 12, Fig. 1. The centre post 35 does not rotate but passes through a hollow shaft of the turntable and is recessed at 37 to facilitate the change of record.
