Abstract

698,558. Automatic gramophones. PAILLARD SOC. ANON. Jan. 31, 1951 [Feb. 15, 1950], No. 2399/51. Class 40 (ii). When the tone-arm 23 reaches the vicinity of the central record supporting spindle 2, a finger 22 on the tone-arm moves one end of a rod 26, causing the other end to move a pawl 27 on a cam 15 into the path of a projection 28 on the turntable 1. The cam 15 is thus rotated until a boss 36 on a cam 37 disengages the pawl from the projection. As the cam 15 rotates it moves a finger 17 which pivots a lever 16 about a shaft 31 against the action of a spring 18. The lever 16 engages a finger 20 and as it moves it allows a lever 19 to pivot about a shaft 32 under the action of a spring 21. Movement of the lever 19 causes a cam edge on the lever to push the finger 22 and lift the tone-arm until the finger engages the edge of an opening 24. At this moment the lever 16 no longer engages the finger 20, but it engages and moves the finger 22 (Fig. 2, not shown) to move the tone-arm outside the records. At the same time, a ramp 33 on the lever 16 raises a spindle 4 to operate the record supporting members 6, which may be as described in Specification 698,557, and allow the bottom record to fall on to the turntable. The finger 17 is then moved in the reverse direction by the cam 15, and the lever 16 on its return, allows the finger 22 to return until it engages in a notch 30 in the lever 19 and returns the record supporting members. When the finger is in the notch 30, the tone-arm is at its correct distance from the edge of the record. The lever 16 again engages the finger 20 and returns the lever 19, the finger 22 remaining in the notch 30 until the needle engages the record. The levers 16, 19 then continue their movements to their rest positions. The position of the opening 24 may be adjusted to vary the spacing between the needle and the upper disc of the pile. The rest position of the tone-arm may be adjusted by varying the position of the notch 30. For this purpose the cam edge on the lever 19 may be a separate member adjustably fixed to the lever. Alternatively, the position of the pivot point 32 may be varied. The mechanism may be operated manually by moving the rod 26.
