Abstract

696,070. Switches held set and freed mechanically; thermal switches. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., July 4, 1951 [July 5, 1950], No. 16721/50. Class 38(v) [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for electrically heating liquids may comprise a coffee percolator in which an auxiliary heating element 5 is energised continuously and a main element 4 is controllable manually by a rotatable cam 13 or automatically by a bimetallic strip 15 secured in heat conducting relationship to the base 2 of a body 1 forming a liquid container. Switching means for the element 4 comprises a slotted resilient member 19 having a rolled end portion 22 and a stiffening rib 23. A movable contact 28 on an arm 20 co-operates with a fixed contact 29, and the bimetallic strip 15 may engage one end of the arm. With the manual control turned to "percolate", Fig. 2 (not shown) contacts 28, 29 are closed and element 5 also is energised. In the "keep hot" position arm 21 of the strip 19 is flexed by the cam 13 and as a result of the stiffness of arm 20, contacts 28, 29 are separated. In the event of the liquid completely evaporating with the main element energised, the container 1 becomes overheated, the bimetallic strip deforms to move arm 20 and open contacts 28, 29, and damage to the percolator is prevented. No damage results from the auxiliary element 5 only being energised.
