Abstract

695,663. Hatch covers. WATERMAN STEAMSHIP CORPORATION. May 9, 1951; [June 21, 1950] No. 10872/51. Class 113 (i). In a hatch cover comprising sections 7 having a long portion (the left half in Fig. 6) overlapping the hatch coaming 3 and a shorter portion (the right half in Fig. 6), means are provided supporting the section in unbalanced condition so that it tends to rotate from a horizontal position (shown in Fig. 6 and the right of Fig. 2) covering the hatch to a vertical position (shown at the left in Fig. 2) in which the shorter portion projects down into the hatch. The coaming 3 has a ledge 4 carrying a bulb angle 5 and a track 6 with teeth and a smooth portion which engage the teeth and smooth portion respectively of a roller 12 secured on a shaft 10 mounted in a frame 8. In its horizontal position the section 7 is supported by this frame resting on the ledge 4 and is prevented from rotating by a bolt 13 being urged by a spring 18 on to a pad 15 on the coaming. The shaft 10 is driven by a shaft 30 through gearing in a box 31, the shaft 30 having a handle 32, which in its stowed position in a clip 36 is disengaged from the end of the shaft, leaving the latter, and hence the roller 12, free to rotate. The bolt 13 is retracted by gearing in a box 17 actuated by a cross shatt 22 driven by a shaft 24 having a handle 27, so that raising the handle retracts the bolt and a latch falls to hold it retracted. Withdrawing the handle 32 from its stowed position engages a clutch 33 so that turning the handle rotates the shaft 30 and hence the roller 12. The section 7 then turns about the nose 9 of the frame 8 until the section is vertical with the ball 11 of the frame horizontal and clear of the ledge 4, with the smooth portion of the roller supporting the section on the smooth portion of the track 6. The section may then be moved along the track manually or the shaft 30 may be power driven. When a section is lowered to its closed position a trigger 43 strikes the track 6, thereby pivoting a rod 44 inwardly against the tension of a spring 45, rotating a shaft 46 which releases the latch holding the bolt 13, the latter then being projected by the spring 18.
