Abstract

695,495. Ignition systems. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Sept. 23, 1949 [Sept. 2, 1948], No. 7129/51. Divided out of 695,442. Class 7 (iv). In a spark type ignition system for an internalcombustion, engine comprising a spark plug having two electrodes 30a, 30b, a high-voltage source, such as a trembler coil 40, supplying the electrodes through a transformer device, for example a tesla coil 42, whereof the primary winding 42a is connected to the trembler coil 40 series with an auxiliary spark gap 44 and whereof the secondary winding 42b of the tesla coil is connected to the electrodes in order to produce an ionizing spark therebetween there is provided a rotating type A.C. or D.C. generator 45 affording a low-voltage high energy source and connected in series with the secondary winding 42b and the electrodes 30a, 30b to produce a high energy spark in the ionized path. A condenser 43 is connected in series with the spark gap 44 whilst a further condenser 46 is connected to the side of the secondary winding 42b in order to by-pass to earth the high-frequency currents generated by the tesla coil instead of allowing them to pass through the A.C. or D.C. generator 45. The Provisional Specification describes how the two electrodes may be insulated and connected with high and low voltage supplies, respectively, whilst a third earthed electrode is provided. The high and low voltage supplies may each be obtained from a separate or common ignition coil.
