Abstract

695,150. Magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. THERMIONIC PRODUCTS, Ltd. Feb. 20, 1952 [Feb. 26, 1951], No. 4691/51. Class 40 (ii). In a multi-channel transducing apparatus for magnetic tape, two or more transducer units 7 are spaced across the width of the tape 12, each transducer 7 having at least two independent transducing systems spaced apart in the direction of the width of the tape by non-magnetic members 11. In the embodiment described, seven such units 7 are arranged in echelon, Fig. 4, and are held by kidney-shaped springs 8 against a troughshaped plate 4 having apertures 5 through which the pole-pieces 6 of the transducer project. The magnetic tape is slightly narrower than the width of the trough, through which it passes, and is held in contact with the pole-pieces by downwardly projecting tongues 16 of a pressure plate 15 held down under the influence of springs 17. An additional transducer unit may be provided for reproducing a timing signal related to the time of recording the individual channels on the record tape.
