Abstract
695,056. Securing metal bands around railway sleepers, &c. BREUNING, R., and HENKE, J. April 24, 1951. [April 24, 1950 ; June 22. 1950] No. 9561/51. Class 146 (ii). [Also in Groups I, XVII, XXV and XXX] Seals and sealing.-A method of fitting a metal strap 2 around a wooden or other body 1, e.g. a railway sleeper, comprises the steps of fitting the strap loosely around the body with its ends free, placing a compressing band 5 over the metal strap, tensioning the compressing band, connecting the untensioned ends of the metal strap 2 and thereafter releasing and removing the compressing band. The compressing apparatus consists of a shoe 13 to which is fastened a chain forming the compressing band 5. The shoe is recessed to clear one end 3 of the strap and the other end 4 of the strap passes between the jaws of a cutter, one jaw being fixed to the shoe and the other jaw 18 being pivoted to the shoe and moved by an integral lever. The free end of the chain 5 after passing round the body 1, over the strap 2, is guided by a roller (not shown) to a member 22 to which it is clamped by a pin 24. The member 22 slides on guides 20 which are detachably mounted on the shoe 13 and is moved away from the shoe to tension the chain by a screw threaded rod 21 which can be rotated either by a hand-wheel 33 or by a ratcher lever 40. The shoe may be provided with apertures in extensions 36 to take a pin 37 to clamp the chain to the shoe after the member 22 has reached its limit of movement so that the latter can be detached from the chain and returned to its initial position for further tensioning of the chain. The shoe is secured to the body 1 either by a stirrup 34 which partially embraces the body 1 or by a chain which is fastened round the body, both ends being secured to the shoe. The shoe may have an eye 38 secured to it, 'to take a lever 39 for pressing the upper end of the strap 2 on to the lower end. The strap 2 is provided with upstanding tongues 6 on one end which engage apertures 7 in the other end. The tongues and apertures may be longitudinally or transversely arranged ; in a modification pressed-up abutments are substituted for the tongues.
