Abstract

695,012. Extruding. FIELDING & PLATT, Ltd. Sept. 8, 1950 [May 26, 1949], No. 14180/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group V] In a method of operating an extrusion press having at least two billet containers 15, 16 from which, in succession, metal is forced through a die 8 by hydraulic rams, the hydraulic pressure medium, during the changeover of extrusion from one container to another is supplied to the rams of the said containers in such a manner that the change in speed of one ram is proportional to the change in speed of the other ram. As applied to a cable sheathing press, chamber 9 is fed through tapering passages 13, 14 which permit ready flow of metal towards the chamber but impede flow in the reverse direction, as described in Specification 479,971. The hydraulic control for the rams may include a change-over valve to divert a predetermined displacement to operate the rams alternately, so that when changing from one ram to another the effect of the pump in the slowing down of one ram is proportional to the increase in speed of the other ram, the rate of flow of the extrusion during the change-over period remaining constant. The temperature of the die box 3 is controlled by the use of known heating or cooling means. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 479,971 and 495,891.
