Abstract
958,314. Sheet extrusion presses. W. S. SHAMBAN & CO. Feb. 26, 1962 [March 14. 1961], No. 7433/62. Heading B5A. [Also in Division G3] A die for the extrusion of sheet material includes a wide wall for confining the fluid mass being extruded under pressure, and provided with means to apply a force to counteract the tendency of the wide wall to bow outwardly. The die comprises a passage structure 20 providing successive upper heating zones A and B, and lower cooling zones C and D. Material is forced in successive increments into the forming passages 20 by a reciprocating ram 30. In the upper heating zones A and B the die passage is formed between thick metal side plates 22. Heating elements 32, 36 are mounted on thick aluminium plates 34, 38 mounted on corresponding side plates 22, the temperature being controlled through thermocouples 35, 40. To resist the tendency for the side plates 22 to bow outwardly, anti-deflection plates 50 are mounted on each of the side plates 22 at the entrance to passage 20 and connected to side plates 22 at their inner edges. The temperature along the inner edge of each plate 50 may be controlled by directing cooling fluid through a tube 54 releasably fitted along that edge, and along the outer edge by cooling means 55 in the form of a zig-zag channel through a plate abutting against anti-deflection plates 50, or heating means 56. The lower cooling zones C and D are formed from a pair of heavy side plates 44, stage C maintaining the temperature in passage 20 substantially lower than in zones A and B, and higher than room temperature, has heating elements 45 and a pair of thermocouples 46 to control this temperature. In an alternative embodiment of the invention the resistance to outwardly bowing of the side plates 22 is created by an hydraulic system of cylinders and pistons acting on transverse pressure members reinforcing corresponding sides of side plates 22.
