Abstract

[Class 83 (iv)] An extrusion press includes a coiler having a drive whose motive power is controlled or transmitted from the press ram or from the pressure fluid operating the ram, in such manner that the speed of the coiler is kept proportional to that of the ram. As shown in Fig. 1, a billet B is extruded by a ram 3 and the extruded material 5 is wound on a coiler 6 driven from a rack 10 on the press cross-head 7 through gearing 11, 13 and 17. The drive includes a change speed gear 15 so that the speed of the coiler relatively to that of the ram can be adjusted for various die apertures. In a modification the cross-head carries another ram which operates in a hydraulic cylinder, the liquid forced out serving to drive a hydraulic motor geared to the coiler. Alternatively the liquid operates the sliding contact of a rheostat controlling the speed of an electric motor which drives the coiler. In another form, the rack 10 drives through gearing an alternating current generator, the current from which drives a synchronous motor geared to the coiler. In a further form, Fig. 5, a, cord 50 secured to the cross-head 7 passes round a pulley 52 and carries a weight 51. Movement of the ram thus causes a rotation of the pulley which is in turn connected to a rotating arm 53 of a speed indicating device. This arm is connected through a servomotor 55 to a variable speed gearbox 56 interposed. in the drive between a motor 57 and the coiler 6. A further modification utilises the rate of flow of fluid into the main cylinder of the press to control a piston coupled to the sliding contact of a rheostat in the circuit of the motor driving the coiler.
